This bagel-and-locks-inspired open-faced sandwich combines avocado and smoked salmon, cut into thin slices of tomato, caper, and red onion. Goat cheese is replaced by cream cheese for extra tang, while lemon juice and a little fresh black pepper strain balance everything.

  • 1 Ripe Avocado
  • freshly ground black pepper and kosher salt
  • 4 slices pumpernickel bread
  • 4 thin slices smoked salmon
  • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, halved
  • sprinkle with flaky sea salt

  • Garnish with dill sprigs


  • Avocado halves should be peeled and scooped into a shallow bowl. Mash with a fork until chunky. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Toast the bread. Brush each slice with oil after softly rubbing it on the cut side of the garlic cloves.
  • Divide evenly mashed avocado into toast and spread. Place a slice of smoked salmon on top of the avocado. Top with a pinch of flaky sea salt, a few pinches of pepper, and some dill. Serve with lemon wedges on the side
