This basic recipe may be customized in a variety of ways. This recipe may be made using white, whole wheat, cinnamon-raisin, Italian, or French bread. Serve with maple syrup and butter or mayonnaise.

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutme
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 4 pcs eggs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 8 slices challah, brioche, or white bread
  • ½ cup maple syrup, warmed


  • Mix cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar in a bowl and set aside for a few minutes.
  • Melt butter in a 10-inch or 12-inch pan over medium heat. In a shallow container, such as a pie dish, mix together the cinnamon mixture, eggs, milk, and vanilla. Bread should be covered in the egg mixture. Heat till golden brown on one side, then move to cook the other. Serve with a side of syrup.
